Our Lady of Fatima and the dioceses of the Netherlands

On May 13th 2017, the bishops of the Netherlands consecrated their dioceses to the Immaculate Heart of Mary during vespers held at 3 pm in the crowded Basilica of Our Lady ¨Star of the Sea¨ in Maastricht. During the vespers, the bishops together with the faithful knelt in front of the image of Our Lady of Fatima and made the consecration together.

Pope Francis in Fatima

On May 12th and 13th 2017, Pope Francis visited Fatima for the occasion of the Centennial of the Apparitions of Our Lady. The Pope went as a “pilgrim of peace” for “the world and the harmony among people” as he recalled. On Saturday May 13th, Pope Francis canonized the two young shepherds Francisco and Jacinta Marto during the Holy Mass. During these two days, hundreds of thousands went on pilgrimage to Fatima. The cause for beatification of the third shepherd child, Sister Lucia dos Santos who died at the age of 98 in 2005, is currently under investigation with the Congregation of Saints in Rome.

History: May 13th, 1917

On May 13th, 1917 took place the first of the six apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to three shepherd children in Fatima, Lucia dos Santos and Francisco and Jacinta Marto. During the six consecutive months, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared each 13th day of the month to the little shepherds. The apparitions lead some to belief and others to disbelief. The final apparition took place on October 13th, 1917. The Blessed Virgin Mary requested conversion, penance and prayer. She asked for the conversion of Russia and for the consecration of the world to her Immaculate Heart. If her requests were not heard, then Our Lady foretold a destructive war in the future, ultimately World War II, and the attempted assassination of the Holy Father. This third secret was kept undisclosed until the year 2000, when the Holy Father Pope John Paul II revealed the last secret in reference to his attempted assassination, which he miraculously survived on May 13, 1981.

Pope John Paul II and Fatima

The Holy Father Pope John Paul II had a strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. He survived an attempted assassination on May 13th 1981 in which the bullet miraculously changed track as it entered his body. Pope John Paul II attributed this to the intercession of Our Lady of Fatima. He placed the bullet that almost killed him, in the crown of Our Lady in Fatima in thanksgiving.

And again I have become indebted to the Blessed Virgin and to all the Patron Saints. Could I forget that the event in St. Peter’s Square took place on the day and at the hour when the first appearance of the Mother of Christ to the poor peasant children has been remembered for over sixty years at Fatima in Portugal? For, in everything that happened to me on that very day, I felt that extraordinary motherly protection and care, which turned out to be stronger than the deadly bullet” Pope John Paul II, General Audience of October 7, 1981.

On March 25, 1984 the Holy Pope John Paul II consecrated the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

“We have recourse to your protection, holy Mother of God”. As we utter the words of this antiphon with which the Church of Christ has prayed for centuries, we find ourselves today before you, Mother, in the Jubilee Year of the Redemption. We find ourselves united with all the pastors of the Church in a particular bond whereby we constitute a body and a college, just as by Christ’s wish the Apostles constituted a body and college with Peter

…….

The power of the consecration lasts for all time and embraces all individuals, peoples and nations. It overcomes every evil that the spirit of darkness is able to awaken, and has in fact awakened in our times, in the heart of man and in his history.”
(Pontifical message of the Holy Pope John Paul II, March 25, 1984)

 Jubilee Prayer of Consecration

Hail, Mother of the Lord,

Virgin Mary, Queen of the Rosary of Fatima!

Blessed among all women,

you are the image of the Church dressed in the Paschal light,

you are the honour of our people,

you are the triumph over the mark of evil.

Prophecy of the merciful Love of the Father,

Teacher of the Annunciation of the Good News of the Son,

Sign of the burning Fire of the Holy Spirit,

teach us, in this valley of joys and sorrows,

the eternal truths that the Father reveals to the little ones.

Show us the strength of your mantle of protection.

In your Immaculate Heart,

be the refuge of sinners

and the way that leads to God.

In unity with my brethren,

In Faith, Hope and Love,

I surrender myself to you.

In unity with my brethren, through you, I consecrate myself to God,

O Virgin of the Rosary of Fatima.

And thus surrounded by the Light that comes from your hands,

I will give Glory to the Lord for ever and ever.

Amen.
